VOLUNTEER WITH US!
SPONSORED VET VOLUNTEERING AT SPCA FIJI ISLANDS
-
Imagine yourself working in a busy shelter and clinic, alongside an incredible team of vets and vet nurses. Your days will be full, fast-paced, and deeply rewarding.
You’ll travel to outreach clinics, staying in villages and on islands and performing surgeries until your fingers can barely tie another knot. You'll play a role in mentoring our team of wonderful interns towards successful careers in veterinary and you will also learn so much yourself. All our volunteers say so. You’ll be part of our school and community education programs—smiling so much your face hurts. Back at the shelter, you’ll care for our beautiful and very adoptable Fiji Specials, where the work is challenging but your heart will feel fuller than ever.
-
We are looking for qualified and experienced veterinarians (minimum 5 years’ experience) who can support and strengthen our growing clinic and outreach services.
While we’re lucky to have an amazing flow of short-term volunteers, we are now seeking longer-term vets who can provide continuity and mentorship to our team.
Return airfare covered
Shared accommodation provided
Daily meal stipend/allowance
Island trips and weekend getaways (when possible!)
Your volunteering experience won’t cost you anything—and in return, you’ll gain invaluable experience, lifelong memories, and be part of something truly meaningful.
We’re known for taking great care of our volunteers (it’s why so many come back!), so come give us a go—we promise you won’t regret it.

"A rewarding experience working with an awesome team that made us really welcome. It really felt like we were making a difference."
(Jeni Watts Vet nurse & Dr Johanna Vicary, New Zealand, volunteers June 2024)
"A wonderful team. The continual hard work and dedication that is put into the SPCA Fiji shelter by the team on the ground is very inspiring and makes it very rewarding to be a part of. I enjoyed all the opportunities available – to consult with locals and their pets, perform many types of surgery, and participate in outreach - an excellent experience."
(Dr Emily Mackle)
"The staff were very friendly and very committed to their work. I felt like I was able to contribute positively to the welfare of animals in Fiji and had opportunities to help with clinic set up and vet training support, which I find rewarding. Outreach clinics were a great experience. Practice manager and Board members went out of their way to provide positive out of work experiences making the entire trip very memorable."
(Dr Micaela Elphick - Hunter Valley, NSW - RSPCA)

Are you a Veterinarian or Volunteer and want to help us help Fiji’s strays?
Some of the most frequent questions we get asked:
Can I play/interact with the animals?
Yes! Once you’ve completed orientation, you’re welcome to play with the cats and dogs. We have designated play areas where you can interact with the dogs, providing them with much-needed human interaction. This time spent with them is vital for their development and significantly improves their chances of being adopted.
Can I walk the dogs?
Absolutely! We have a fantastic volunteer team that has initiated a dog walking programme. Volunteers work together in small groups to train the dogs to walk with harnesses and leads, helping them become more adoptable.
Will I have to clean the cages?
As a volunteer, you have the flexibility to choose how you'd like to spend your time. The shelter team works hard every day to keep the cages and areas clean to ensure the animals stay healthy. Since this is a big task, they often appreciate a helping hand with cleaning. Many of our volunteers are happy to pitch in and assist with these tasks.
What are the main volunteering tasks?
Volunteering at the SPCA offers an exciting variety of activities. Volunteers may, on a rostered basis, assist with dog walking, puppy playtime, washing dogs and puppies, playing with and brushing the cats, making treats and leashes, cleaning, feeding, and more. There are also opportunities to help with outreach clinics, administration, photography, and social media.
What should I wear?
Volunteering can be dirty but rewarding work! We recommend wearing old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and closed-toe shoes are essential. Since most of the work is outdoors, it's a good idea to bring a hat, sunscreen, and water.
Help us help animals!
SPCA provides highly subsidised desexing services and welfare support for animals at our clinic in Suva. The Outreach Programme aims to take this service to target communities that otherwise have no access to veterinary services.
This work is only possible through access to volunteer veterinarians, sponsorships and partnerships.
Regular outreach sessions are scheduled depending on the availability of local and international veterinarians.
